At Go for Goals Sports Centre, we hold one important belief: sports give young people more than just a game to play. It opens doors, teaches essential life skills, and helps lay the foundation for success on and off the field.
Having spent many years helping our youth hone their sports skills, we realized that to reach the next level, we needed to invest in our infrastructure. Our bumpy sand courts had served us well, but we needed more if we wanted to really help our youth succeed. This led us to undertake the enormous task of building our very own sports court capable of hosting a full-sized Team Handball court, 4 volleyball courts, 4 dodgeball courts, and 1 basketball court.
Currently, in all of mainland Tanzania, there are only three official-sized Team Handball courts – all of which belong to government institutions and not easily accessible to local teams. Upon completion of our court, the town of Mlamleni will home the only publicly-accessibly, full-sized Team Handball court in all of mainland Tanzania!
Having full-time access to the court will provide an enormous advantage for the youth of Go for Goals and as well as benefit the entire community of Mlamleni. It will allow the youth an opportunity to train on an official court, which will help them excel and further increase their chances of being recruited to provincial teams, national teams, and by various schools and universities. The community will benefit as games and tournaments will bring player and spectators to Mlamleni who will inevitably support the local stores, restaurants, and services around town. It is a win-win-win for everyone!
We are thankful for the support both in terms of planning as well as funding from Canadian-based non-profit, Growing Opportunities International, whose contribution made it possible for us to take the first bold steps toward building this court.
The construction of the court has long been the dream of Go for Goals founder – Moshi Ally. As such, he has been overseeing the construction, every step of way. The court contractor, Fundi Mandingo and his assistants, along with over 30 of the Go for Goals youth, have put in hours and hours of physical labour to bring the court to its current level. From removing the trees, shoveling the sand, laying the bricks, breaking and placing the rocks, mixing, pouring, and watering the cement – so many hands have helped make this work possible!
This court is more than a playing surface. It represents:
Every stone placed here carries a young person’s dream.
A living project
We are proud of the hard work that has been done to bring the court construction this far. It has not been an easy task at any stage. Currently, construction has been paused due to lack of funding. Unfortunately, the court costs have far exceeded the initial projection. However, the dream does not stop. This is a living project, waiting for the next chapter to begin.
We warmly invite individuals, organizations, sports partners, well-wishers and donors to join us in completing this project. We welcome support through:
No contribution is too small when the goal is changing lives through sport. With continued cooperation, support, and belief, this ground will soon host:
And when that day comes, everyone who supported this journey will be part of the victory. At Go For Goals Sports Centre, we don’t just build facilities, we build futures.
